Wading River Fire Department
The Wading River Fire Department is an incorporated organization within New York State, assigned to the 6th Division of the Suffolk County Department of Fire, Rescue & Emergency Services (SCFRES). The department responds to the fires, accidents, marine emergencies and emergency medical calls within the Wading River Fire District. Our base station call sign is 6-3-0 through SCFRES. On average, the department responds to over 1,000 calls each year, with a high percentage being EMS related incidents.
The fire department operates out of two fire stations. The main firehouse is at 1503 N. Country Rd., Wading River and station 2 is located at 700 Hulse Landing Rd., Wading River. The fleet includes four chief vehicles, one medic vehicle, two ambulances, one heavy rescue truck, three engines, one tanker, one ladder truck, three brush trucks, one marine vessel and several support vehicles. This also includes an antique piece of equipment.
Currently, the department has approximately 80 volunteers organized into a chief staff and four company’s – Co. 1, Co. 2, Rescue and Fire Police. Each company has line officers. Our department membership includes interior firefighters, exterior firefighters, EMS and support personnel. All certifications for various levels of membership (Firefighter I / EMT-B / EMT-CC / etc.) are obtained at no cost to the fire department member. In addition to individual training for certifications, monthly drills, work details, trainings and meetings are conducted as a department.
Our neighboring fire departments and ambulance corps are; Riverhead Fire Department (6-2-0) to our east, Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corp (6-5-0) to our east and south, Manorville Fire Department (5-16-0) and Ridge Fire Department (5-22-0) to our south and Rocky Point Fire Department (5A-7-0) to our west.
The department also has an executive board in charge of the social functions of the department membership. This includes a president, vice-president, secretary, treasurer and six directors. Also, within the department are several committees, including new membership. The department conducts an annual fund drive to support activities not covered under fire district expenses, which include the chartering of the Boy Scouts of America, Troop 94.
During the course of the year, the department promotes fire prevention and conducts an annual open house every October, in addition to teaching fire prevention at the local pre-schools and the elementary school. The department also participates in several parades throughout the year.
